What is a Domain Name?

A domain name uniquely identifies a website and is often referred to as a website’s online home or real estate. Typing a domain name (also called a URL) into a browser allows a user to directly access that site. Domain names are used for both website addresses and for email addresses.

How Can I Pick the Best Domain Name?

Your domain name is literally your online identity and impacts the perception that users and searchers will have of your site. It should be easy to remember, should use the best domain extension for the type of site you own, and should include a keyword pertaining to the site’s topic, if possible.

You can have multiple domains that focus on different aspects of offerings of your business, too. For example, a store that sells yard equipment, might have the main domain and website of YardEquipment.com, with smaller sites including StrongRakes.com, GardenTools.com, etc. These sites could also all link to each other, improving SEO efforts.

What Are the Different Parts of a Domain Name?

You most often see domains written out as www.BuyDomains.com. A domain consists of three main parts. In this example,

  1. www, or anysubdomain (like domaininfo.buydomains.com) denotes a part of a domain that is under the umbrella of the main domain, in this case:
  2. buydomains, which is the domain name itself.
  3. The .com is called the extension. Many people will automatically type in .com after any domain, resulting in direct navigation or type in traffic.

What Do The Different Extensions Represent?

The most common extensions include:

  • .COM — Abbreviation of “Commerce” — currently available to all
  • .NET — Abbreviation of “Network” — currently available to all
  • .ORG — Abbreviation of “Organization” — currently available to all
